Buick . 1996 Subaru 2.2 Drive Belt InstallationThe drive belt used on a 1996 Subaru 2.2-liter engine is a serpentine belt. This means the engine uses one belt to run all of the engine accessories like the air conditioning, water pump, power steering pump and alternator. The installation process is made easier by a pulley diagram printed on the underside of the engine hood. This diagram shows you the routing of the belt through the pulleys. If the diagram is missing, draw one before you begin to remove the old belt. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Socket set Step by Step : 1 Locate the idler pulley to the left of the crankshaft pulley in the center of the engine. The idler pulley bolts to the engine block and does not connect to any accessories on the engine. 2 Place the 3/8-inch ratchet driver from your socket set into the square hole in the center of the pulley. Pull up on the handle to release tension on the Subaru's old serpentine drive belt. 3 Pull the belt off the idler pulley and lower the handle on the ratchet. 4 Remove the belt from the other pulleys and then use the diagram to place the new belt onto all of the pulleys except the idler pulley. 5 Pull up on the ratchet handle and slide the belt over the idler pulley. 6 Lower the handle to apply pressure on the belt and then remove the ratchet handle from the idler pulley.
Buick . How to Change the Idler Pulley on a 2002 Ford FocusThe idler pulley on the 2002 Ford Focus helps keep the belt routed properly on the pulleys. It is a smooth-surfaced pulley, which means that the top of the belt rides over the pulley, rather than the grooved side. If the idler pulley bearings, which are enclosed in a closed system, wear out, the idler must be replaced, as the idler pulley is not serviceable. The bearings might become noisy or the idler pulley could have resistance when it turns. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Set of sockets Ratchet Step by Step : 1 Park the car and turn off it's engine. Open and secure the hood. Check for the belt routing diagram sticker on the fan shroud or the underside of the hood. If the sticker is missing, draw a sketch of the belt routing so you can properly route the belt. 2 Slide the appropriate socket onto the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley. Snap the ratchet into place. Push the ratchet handle, moving the tensioner away from the belt to loosen tension on the pulley. Lift the belt off the pulleys. Allow the pulley to gently return to its normal position. It is spring loaded -- do not let it snap or you could damage the tensioner. 3 Remove the bolt from the center of the idler pulley, then pull the pulley off the block. Slide the bolt through the center of the new pulley, then bolt it up to the block. Tighten the bolt firmly. 4 Route the belt around the pulleys, starting with the crankshaft pulley, and ending with the tensioner pulley. Hold tension on the belt with one hand while, with the other, place the ratchet and socket on the tensioner pulley's bolt. Push the tensioner toward the engine and slide the belt onto the tensioner. Allow the tensioner to move back into place without letting it snap. Check the belt to ensure that it is properly seated on all the pulleys. *another. u0 Coil springs look like old-fashioned bed springs. They're usually found at the front of the car, although they can be at both the front and the rear. Coil springs are typically used with strut-type suspensions, too. Figure 11-7 shows one type of coil spring; Figure 16-7 shows front and rear springs. You can find instructions for lubricating them in Chapter 16. At the front end, coil springs help cushion the bumps, vibrations, and steering movements. At the rear, they're suspended between control arms that have rubber bushings. v0 Torsion bars (refer to Figures 11-7 and 16-9) are used mainly in sport-utility vehicles and pre-1980 Chrysler products. They are located at the front of the vehicle, connected to the lower control arms. They twist to accommodate differences in the load that the car may be carrying, allowing the front wheels to move up and down freely. Think of torsion bars as coil springs that didn't get wound into a spiral. W Air springs are usually found on luxury vehicles. A rubber air spring can be filled with the right amount of compressed air to control the ride and maintain the proper height. With this type of system, a computer monitors the ride height and signals an onboard air compressor to pump more air into the air springs whenever weight is added to the vehicle. When the weight is removed, the computer turns on an exhaust solenoid to let air out of the air springs (refer to Figures 11-7 and 16-10). Usually, there's nothing to lubricate with air springs. But check with the dealer to find out whether it's okay to apply a rubber conditioner to the air bags to prevent them from wearing out prematurely. .Chapter 11: Steering and Suspension Systems Smooth the Way Shocks and struts Shock absorbers (see Figure 11-9) and MacPherson struts (see Figure 11-10) do most of the work of protecting the passenger compartment from bumps. One or the other is located near each wheel. The way they cut down on vertical movement is interesting. When a wheel hits a bump, it tends to keep bouncing up and down long after the bump has been left behind unless the movement is controlled. The bouncing effect is due to the inflated rubber tire on the wheel, and also to the fact that a coil spring that is either pulled or compressed doesn't just snap back into its former shape but keeps moving up and down for some time afterward. Shock absorbers and struts allow the springs to compress freely and to return or rebound slowly — like the door check on a storm door that opens quickly and easily but closes gently. 466
